When Cancer Changes the Landscape: Sex, Intimacy, & Your Body

Navigating body image, sexual health, and intimacy after an adolescent or young adult cancer diagnosis

Cancer has a way of changing things you never expected it to touch.

For adolescents and young adults (AYAs), a cancer diagnosis can arrive during a time when so much of life is already changing. You may be figuring out who you are, building relationships, dating, exploring sexuality, becoming more independent, starting a career, or imagining what you want your future to look like.

Then cancer enters the picture.

Suddenly, your body may look or feel different, and your relationship with it may change. Sex might not feel the way it once did. Desire can show up differently or even disappear. A relationship that once felt romantic may begin to feel more like a relationship between a patient and caregiver.

These changes can be confusing, frustrating, and sometimes deeply isolating. And despite their deep and personal impacts, these are often the things no one thinks to ask about.

In a recent AYA Talks presentation, “A Healthy Dose of Self-Love: Addressing Body and Sexual Health After a Cancer Diagnosis,” Carrie Wheeler, DNP, CPNP-AC, and I brought together our perspectives from AYA oncology and sexual health to explore these changes and ways to begin navigating them. As a licensed clinical social worker and sex therapist who has spent much of my career working with adolescents and young adults affected by cancer, I focused on how cancer can impact sexuality, desire, intimacy, and relationships.

In my work with individuals and couples affected by cancer and chronic illness, I help people make space for these changes while exploring ways to reconnect with their bodies, their sexuality, and each other. If you're navigating changes in desire, intimacy, body image, or your relationship after cancer, therapy can offer a place to talk about the parts of the experience that don't always get talked about.

If you'd like to explore whether working together might be a good fit, I offer a complimentary 15-minute phone consultation. I’d love to hear from you.
